State of Ohio Requires a Boiler Operator License.

In Ohio operating an industrial boiler requires specific licensing governed by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Industrial Compliance. Licenses are categorized based on boiler pressure and type, each with distinct experience and training prerequisites. (Source: Rule 1301:3-5-10)

License Categories & Requirements

  • Low-Pressure Boiler Operator - Steam boilers operating at or below 15 psi

  • High-Pressure Boiler Operator - Steam boilers operating above 15 psi

  • Stationary Steam Engineer - Operation of steam turbines exceeding 30 horsepower

In addition to the licensing requirements, operational compliance is also mandated by the State of Ohio. Ohio law mandates that certain boilers and steam engines must be operated by licensed individuals as follows:

  • Low-pressure steam boilers with more than 360 square feet of high pressure/power, heating surface

  • Power boilers with more than 360 square feet of high pressure/power, heating surface

  • Stationary steam engines operating above 30 horsepower

Unlicensed individuals may operate such equipment only under the direct supervision of a licensed operator.

Operating industrial boilers without the appropriate license is a violation of state law.

Penalties are often determined on a case-by-case basis, potentially influenced by factors such as the severity of the violation, any resulting damage, and the compliance history of the business.

Enforcement Actions May Include:

  • Cease and Desist Orders: The Division of Industrial Compliance may issue orders to halt operations until compliance is achieved.

  • Revocation of Certificates: Certificates of operation for the boilers in question may be revoked or suspended.

  • Legal Action: Persistent non-compliance could lead to legal proceedings, which might result in court-imposed fines or other penalties.

Remove any likelihood of getting caught without the proper credentials for your operators.
